An hour by the James
There wasn't a plan for this morning.
We woke with the sunrise, as we usually do, had our morning coffee, and drove down to the James River to find a quiet spot on the rocks. Then we simply sat, feet dangling in the cold water.
For the next hour the river entertained us.
An osprey circled overhead, patiently scanning the water before diving toward a fish. A family of geese carried on loud conversations that only they seemed to understand. Canoes and kayaks drifted past, each one carrying people who had decided that this Sunday wasn't meant for rushing.
My favorite moment was the cutest river dog sitting patiently in the front of a canoe, ears perked up, taking in the ride as if it had been planning this adventure all week.
Nothing remarkable happened.
And somehow, that's exactly what made it remarkable.
It's easy to believe we always have to be making something, checking something off a list, or planning the next project. I certainly fall into that trap. There is always another painting to finish, another product to photograph, another listing to improve.
This morning reminded me that sometimes inspiration arrives when I stop looking for it.
As I watched the light dance across the water, I caught myself noticing the same things that draw me to watercolor and resin. The way colors shift depending on where you're standing. The way sunlight changes everything it touches. The quiet beauty hidden in ordinary moments.
Those are the moments I hope find their way into the things I create.
Whether it's a painting, or a pair of earrings, I'm always trying to capture a little piece of that feeling. Not the river itself, but the calm that comes from slowing down long enough to notice it.
I hope you found a quiet moment this weekend too.
And if you didn't, maybe this is your reminder that they don't have to be planned. Sometimes all it takes is an hour, a rock, and a place to sit while the world goes about its day.
Warm wishes,
Manny
